With the iPad you could use many other audio interfaces through the camera connection kit as well. The AmpKit LiNK HD is a pure digital guitar interface that connects to your Mac or iOS device with the included USB or Lightning cables. No real problem, though, at least with my Klipsch headphones and in ears it's definitely loud enough.
Also, the output comes from the headphone out of the phone and is kind of weak. And of course you can't charge the phone or connect anything else to the lightning port obviously, while the iRig is plugged in. Because there is no way to remember the right position on the gain wheel you have to find the right volume everytime you use it. One thing that is a little tricky is setting up the input volume. I got the iRig for its lightning connectivity. Never tried anything else, though, so maybe the Jam is better. It's pretty good IMHO, a lot better than the old iRig for sure. I run it into my iPhone 5 or iPad mini with Jamup.
